When New Porgera Limited needed a fleet of Toyota LandCruisers prepared for deployment into active mining operations at the Porgera Gold Mine, they brought in MasterSystem Technologies. Not for a quick fit-out. For a complete engineering solution — managed end to end, delivered to NPL’s exact operational and safety standards, with every vehicle inspected, tested, and formally commissioned before it turned a wheel on site.
This is how that project came together.
A Toyota LandCruiser leaves the factory as one of the most capable and reliable four-wheel-drive platforms in the world. It is engineered to handle remote terrain, extreme heat, demanding workloads. But it is not mine-ready.
A standard vehicle carries no mine specification safety markings, no dual battery isolation system, no handbrake or door monitoring, no warning beacon, no elevated lighting, no mine-grade communications equipment. In an active mining environment — with heavy machinery, restricted visibility, shift workers, haul roads, and explosive operations nearby — a standard vehicle is a liability.
The Porgera Gold Mine does not allow standard vehicles. Neither does any serious mining operation.
After MST completes a mine specification upgrade, the vehicle looks different, behaves differently, and carries a different level of safety capability into the field.
The driver can see further and be seen from further away. The vehicle monitors its own handbrake engagement and door status, alerting the operator before a hazard develops. A roof-mounted warning beacon signals its presence on haul roads and restricted zones. Dual battery isolation switches allow power to be cut fast in an emergency. The two-way radio keeps the operator connected to site communications at all times. Fire suppression equipment is properly mounted and instantly accessible.
And every single one of those systems has been tested and confirmed operational before the vehicle was released from our workshop.
The specification isn’t there to make the vehicle look the part.
It’s there because the consequences of getting it wrong are measured in lives, not warranty claims.
The mine specification requirement covers two integrated work streams — mechanical and electrical. MST’s teams completed both under controlled workshop conditions, with each system installed, verified, and integrated with the next before the vehicle advanced to the following stage.

One of the least visible — and most important — aspects of a professional mine specification upgrade is the coordination between mechanical and electrical installation teams. Get it wrong, and the result is a vehicle with systems that conflict, or components that fail prematurely because the installation sequence was incorrect.
On the NPL project, MST’s mechanical and auto-electrical teams operated as a single coordinated process, not two separate ones. The sequence mattered.
The bullbar goes on before any spotlight wiring runs through the front section. The elevated lighting system is positioned and mounted before the roof beacon above it. The wiring modifications are completed and verified before the monitoring modules are integrated. The battery isolation switches are installed and their wiring confirmed before the full electrical system is commissioned.
Each stage gates the next. A vehicle doesn’t move forward until the previous stage is signed off. That discipline is the difference between a vehicle that’s been fitted out and a vehicle that works — reliably, safely, and for the duration of its operational life on site.
In a mine environment, a vehicle that fails six weeks into service is not a maintenance problem. It’s an engineering failure that should have been caught in the workshop.
